Bramble & Basin started in 2018 with a single batch of olive oil soap made on a kitchen table in a rented cottage. The goal was simple: make something for sensitive skin that actually worked without a list of ingredients that read like a chemistry exam.
That first batch took four attempts to get right. The early results were either too soft, too crumbly, or cured with an unpleasant orange tinge that signalled oxidised oils. But batch five was different. It was firm, creamy, and produced a lather that felt genuinely nourishing rather than stripping.
Friends asked for bars. Then their friends did. Within a year, local shops in Somerset were stocking our soaps, and we moved production to a converted barn where we could cure hundreds of bars at a time without taking over every flat surface in the house.
These principles shape every product we make and every decision about how we run this business.
Every ingredient in every product is listed plainly on the label, with both the common name and INCI name. We never hide behind vague terms like "fragrance" or "parfum" because we have nothing to hide.
We made the decision early on to exclude palm oil from all formulations. It takes more work to achieve the same hardness and lather profile, but we believe the environmental trade-off is worth the extra effort.
Soap off-cuts become guest soaps or sample bars. Essential oil bottles get cleaned and returned to suppliers. Our packaging is either recycled, recyclable, or compostable. We aim for zero landfill from our workshop.
Our olive oil comes from a family grove in Andalusia that has been producing oil for four generations. The coconut oil is organic and fair-trade sourced from Sri Lanka. Shea butter arrives unrefined from a women's cooperative in Ghana.
Essential oils are the trickiest ingredient to source responsibly. We work with a handful of distillers who can provide batch-specific testing for purity, and we never buy essential oils from anonymous wholesale brokers regardless of how competitive the price might be.
Locally, we grow our own lavender, calendula, and chamomile in raised beds behind the workshop. These provide the dried botanicals you see in many of our bars and the infused oils that give some varieties their colour.
"I switched to Bramble & Basin two years ago after dealing with eczema flare-ups from commercial soap. My skin has never been calmer. The lavender bar is a permanent fixture in my bathroom now."
Sarah M., Bath"The charcoal bar completely changed my morning routine. It keeps my skin clear without that tight, dried-out feeling. And it lasts ages compared to shop-bought bars."
